Inward Faith, Outward Mission

Health Ministries

Welcome to the FUMCC Health Ministries

The Health Ministries Team at FUMC is a group of people acting on faith, inspired by Christ’s witness to the healing activity of God. The team reaches out to strengthen, empower and improve the spiritual, physical, mental health of this congregation and the community we serve through increasing self-knowledge, personal responsibility and interdependence among God’s people. This ministry crosses the entire life span as well as the entire spectrum of health need. It does not replace your healthcare professional. The team strives to foster a spiritual healing presence in the local and global community and to serve as a reminder that Christ came to give us abundant life.

"I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."  -  John 10: 10 (NKJV)

New Health Ministry Survey Coming

In 2007, Health Ministries conducted a survey in order to plan needed programs for our church and community.  These programs are completed.  What do you need that would help you manage your health in the future?  Would you be interested in longer term group programs such as the following offered by AARP, free of charge?  These classes can be offered at the church:

  • Living Healthy - This class teaches about living with chronic disease.  6 week module – 2 1/2 hours each session
  • Matter of Balance - Decline sometimes begins with a fall and a bone break.  Be proactive in learning to make yourself stronger.  4 week module
  • Powerful Tools for Caregivers – Are you struggling to give care to a loved one?  Feeling stressed out?  Come to share and hear ways of coping.  6 week module
  • Diabetes Management – Learn from an expert new ways of eating, medications, testing etc.  4 week module
  • Walk With Ease – 4 week module
  • Walking Program – 10 week module

Please call Carolyn Corn at 851-0674 or send e-mail at carolyncorn@nc.rr.com, if you would be interested in attending any of the groups listed above.

Spiritual Yoga Class Completed
During 2 months of February and March, 2010, FUMCC was blessed to have Trisha McDuffee, Yoga Instructor, help us loosen our cranky muscles, gain more flexibility, reduce tension and make new friends. Nineteen participants, of all degrees of physical fitness, found this to be energizing and very spiritual.  Health Ministries is devoted to nurturing the Mind, Body and Soul.  God wants us to take care of our physical selves so he can use us better for his service. (Trisha is second from left)

At a Health Ministries program on "Healthy Holiday Cooking," there was mention of the fact that Blue Cross/Blue Shield is one of the insurance companies who will pay for dietary consultation. Diane Danchi, Licensed Dietitian/ Nutritionist from Rex Wellness, brought this to our attention. Any of you who have BCBS insurance and are interested in learning more about good nutrition might want to contact BCBS about your coverage for this wellness program. There are several qualified agencies out there.

Organ Donation
There are over 103,000 people waiting and over 3,000 are right here in our state of North Carolina for Organ Transplants. There is no cost just a good hearted person that wants to give of themselves.

Think about it and have a discussion with your family & friends and have a Heart put on your license if you would like to become an Organ & Tissue Donor. You can have the chance to save 8 lives and enhance the lives of 50 others by becoming a tissue donor as well. You can have the Heart placed on your license at DMV and you can also register to be an Organ & Tissue Donor at www.donatelifenc.org

Arty Totillo from Carolina Donor Services spoke at the Celebration Service on 11/22/09 "Don't Take Your Organs To Heaven, Heaven Knows We Need Them Here"  If you need further information, contact Arty at 919-234-3428.

Arty's story:
I was transplanted back in NY in 2003 with a liver that I had waited for just about 5 yrs with the shortage of donors. The organs go to the person that is the sickest at the time. Then when I finally was sick enough the doctors told my wife if I didn't receive a liver within a few days, I wasn't going to get one.  I would be too sick to receive the liver and they told my wife I would only last maybe 2 weeks at the most. But with the Grace of God I received the greatest GIFT that any one could get on Mothers Day 5/11/03.
Then last year I went into rejection and was placed back on the waiting list for another liver and kidney as well. But putting my faith in God and the doctors I am doing much better at the present time.

Did you know we have two AEDs on site?  These are Automated External Defibrillators, used to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).  One is located in the Children’s Center on the wall by the MCC office (Templeton Building first floor near the side entrance) and the other is located on the wall between the Sanctuary and the front offices.

The Health Ministries Committee meets the second Sunday of each month (first Sunday April 5, May 3)  at 5:00PM in room 212. We welcome new faces and fresh ideas!! Please come help us brainstorm, develop, and implement!
